GPT-5 becomes ChatGPT’s default

A unified system that routes between a fast answer and a longer think. The API ships gpt-5, mini, and nano the same day.

On 7 August 2025 OpenAI introduced GPT-5 as the new default in ChatGPT for Free, Plus, Pro, and Team, with Enterprise and Edu a week later. It is a unified system: a fast path, a longer-reasoning path, and a router that chooses.

Developers get gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano on the API. List prices start at $1.25 / $10 per million tokens for gpt-5, down to $0.05 / $0.40 for nano. Microsoft put the model into Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and Azure AI Foundry.

Default is a distribution choice. It does not tell you when the router picked the cheap path, or whether the long path was enough.
